The ultimate 100 mile journey, traversing the entirety of the Grampians mountain range from Mt Zero in the north to Dunkeld in the south.

The challenge will entail climbing and descending 7700m through a combination of sandstone slabs, gradual smooth trail, stairs and technical rocky outcrops. It is an incredibly challenging trail that will test the mind and body.

The route follows the full spine of the range along 99% single hiking trail and so the views throughout the journey will outweigh the physical toll and inspire you well beyond the finish.

course description

Along the way runners will pass 12 campsites each with stunning huts built in the most secluded areas along the route. There will be 11 aid stations to assist the runners at road crossings, trails heads, Halls Gap and public campgrounds.

Much of the journey goes through remote wilderness areas, where the rocky trail is a welcomed source of safety. There is a real sense of connection to nature and place. The race will be broken up into four sections each with major aid stations at each completion.

The first leg to Halls Gap starts with the iconic climb up the rock slab to reveal the entirety of the world famous Taipan Wall. After running under the rock wall the trail finds its groove as it toggles between a thin rocky uneven surface and a smooth dirt ribbon. There are numerous waterfalls through here, with continual 360 views of the entire Grampians grandeur, which is a common theme throughout the whole run.

The second section through to Duwul/Mt William has continual long climbs. It may be nightfall for the majority of the field heading up to the famous Pinnacles Lookout or Mount Rosea. This section is draining with foot placement and ankle stability being the key. Conserve energy when possible. Take time at Borough Huts to compose yourself and fuel and hydrate. The next 34km to Jimmy Creek are the crux of the race. There is much technical trail, especially up to, and across the Seven Dials and Redmans Bluff. However, the trail improves from here and the views from the top are spectacular as the trail adheres to a clifftop along to Mt William Aid Station.

The next section through to Griffin Fireline is a net downhill. Except for the speedy runners it will be well into the daylight of Saturday for the bulk of the field to navigate this difficult stretch in the day. It starts with a very challenging 19k which crosses the Major Mitchell Plateau up to the high point of the race, Durd Durd at 1167m asl. A very long and initially steep descent brings you to Jimmy Creek where the runners will be rewarded for having done the hardest sections of the race. Many short punchy climbs and flowy downs follow. There is a lot of newly built trail, and it is much appreciated. It will be hard to find rhythm through these shorter continual hills, with some rock hopping, choppy climbs mixed in with fast terrain.

The final section passes over some of the well-known peaks in the southern section of the range. This means lots of steep ascent, often on stairs to some striking summits including Mud-Dadjug/Mt Abrupt, and Wurgarri/Mt Sturgeon. Despite being a brutal end, people will have a sense of the journey’s end, which may bring joy but also sadness that the adventure must come to an end. Runners take an enjoyable river trail to the town centre, where the party celebration awaits!

  • Runners in the GPT 100 Miler may have pacers accompany them on course from Borough Huts Campground (72km) to the finish. Runners may have different, the same, or no pacers for each of the following pacing legs. Note, the maximum Pacing Legs ONE pacer can do is TWO Legs, ie. one person cannot pace all three legs.

    There are three 'Pacing Legs':

    • LEG 1: Borough Huts (72km) to Jimmy Creek Rd (106km) {34km, 2035m+, 2010m-}

    • LEG 2: Jimmy Creek Rd (106km) to Cassidys Gap (140.5km) {34.5km, 1470m+, 1420m-}

    • LEG 3: Cassidys Gap (140.5km) to Finish (162km) {21.5km, 1105m+, 1215m-}

    Prices

    Each pacer is required to register and pay an entry fee (the runner that is racing can do this for their pacers by registering for them in Race Roster). This will cover insurance and aid station supply. This can be paid through the online registration. All Pacer’s details must be accurate in the system by 17 November!

    • LEG 1: $30 p/pacer

    • LEG 2: $30 p/pacer

    • LEG 3: $30 p/pacer

    Pacer Rules:

    • Pacers for the Miler runners must be registered in Race Roster for the correct leg/legs that they will be running by 17 November. This is important so that we have the details and medical background for everyone out on course and we know who exactly is running and when.

    • A Pacer can only pace up to 2 legs. We do not want the added risk of having a pacer essentially running an incredibly hard Ultra on the back half of the course. We have included Pacers in the race to increase safety for our runners, especially through the night.

    • Pacers must carry the same mandatory gear required by the 100-mile runners.

    • Except for a medical emergency, Pacers are not allowed to carry any gear, food or drink for their Miler runner to use or consume. They are only there to help with navigation, safety and encouragement.

    • Pacers can only join their Runners at the designated aid station for each pacing leg start.

    • A runner can only ever be accompanied by ONE Pacer on a Leg. Pacers are intended to increase the safety of our event by having someone to navigate and assist a runner mentally to avoid poor choices with nutrition, hydration and cliff danger. Having more than one Pacer would simply add to the overall risk of our event by adding more people to our duty of care and potentially more humans that could need assistance from our medical team.

  • Gpt100 Miler
